WAS AN eventful year - Chernobyl exploded,
President Marcos and his shoe loving wife Imelda
were deposed, Nissan started car production in
Sunderland and Indupart was born. The company
started by Andrew Cannon and Julius Schubert in
Watford, began by selling electronic detection
systems for industrial doors and a small section
of door parts. In
1990 Robin Taylor was headhunted from Henderson
Doors to head up sales. "We identified a
big opportunity to sell parts to the independent
door repair trade," explained Robin.
"At that time, the majors would sell parts
to repairers, but as they wanted to keep most of
the repair business for themselves, they would
price parts that made it hard for independent
operators. We stepped in with compatible quality
components at fair prices."The first
northern depot was a small room with a shipping
container for stock. After six months we added a
second container and a year later we opened a
small unit in Trafford Park. Indupart and the
contractors, who make up the UK's independent
door repair sector, were definitely in business. From
selling parts for repairs, it was natural to
move into assembling complete door kits and so
the new door business was born. New supply
partners entered the scene. Ward for panels and
Becker for motors. Business grew to such an
extent that we are now the largets UK stockholder for both these products. |

| Twenty
years on, we are still the market leader. The
independent door supply and repair segment isn't just
ours any more and competitors have encroached, pitching
price as their only advantage. As we all know, the
lowest price isn't always the best deal - if it was,
then the roads would be full of Peroda Nippas. What? -
Exactly! Our offer to the market is not based on price
alone, but on quality, a level of technical back up and
service that offers real value. This even extends to the
provision of training - over 80 people from 20 different
companies attended our courses last year and this year
one company alone has booked 57 places! An eventful 20
years, but Indupart is still a young company with lots
of ideas and energy. We are now more resourceful and
have the experience to take them forward. |

| By
1997 we had outgrown a second unit in Trafford
Park and moved to the present site in Stockport.
Watford closed and a new branch was opened in
Hemel Hempstead with Bristol and Glasgow
following soon after. The building at Stockport
offered scope for expansion, but was a wreck,
with no offices, water, electricity or gas. We
took on the refurbishment ourselves and in 18
months had built the new offices and knocked the
building into shape. This is not just a story
of triumphal success. Every growing business
needs money and cash flow was sometimes very
tight, especially when we moved up a gear to
develop Stockport. Surviving these times so
often depends on and we must acknowledge the
considerable efforts put in by the team,
particularly long term members Gary Sheehan,
Jackie Shaw, Wayne Riley, Mark Cannings and so
many other. |
